European Studies Research Institute
The European Studies Research Institute (ESRI) is one of the largest multidisciplinary European Studies research centres in the UK with some 40 staff and over 60 postgraduate researchers.  It specialises in European history, politics, international relations, literature, culture and language, with Europe being interpreted in its widest geographical sense.  For more than a decade its research has been ranked as having international impact in the national Research Assessment Exercises (RAE 1996: 5A; 2001: 5A). 

The 2008 RAE assessed European Studies (30 staff) as having 75% of its research activity of ‘international’ quality with 25% being classed as ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world class’. Research Fortnight ranked European Studies research at Salford as 1st in the North West and 7th in the UK out of 27 universities nationally.  

The 2008 RAE Linguistics panel assessed the Linguistics and Translation Studies (10 staff) research as having 75% of its research activity of ‘international’ quality with 35% classed as ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world class’. Research Fortnight ranked Linguistics research at Salford as 14th in the UK.  

ESRI has a thriving postgraduate community, and offers numerous funding opportunities, including ESRC 1+3 PhD studentships.
